Freak The Mighty Author Talk

Rodman Philbrick, author of Freak the Mighty, will be doing another author talk with our 7th grade students on February 12th. Using Skype, this is a great opportunity to collaborate with the author, and to enhance student learning with real world experiences.

8th Grade Excursions to The Culinary Institute of America
Ms. Shearer's classes had the opportunity to go visit the CIA in Hyde Park, New York and experience the best fine dining. The following review was written by one of the students who attended the trip.

Food, Food, Food

Food, food, food! Everything at the Culinary Institute of America is about food. The moment I opened the door and entered the building, my nose was filled with the scents of freshly baked bread, cookies, cake, chocolate and chicken. Just at that moment I knew I was going to enjoy my day. Waiting beside the stairs were three students. They introduced themselves and split us into three groups. My groups’ guide name was Chelsea. She told us that she was she was in the CIA’s culinary arts program. This commenced the “world of food.”
Chelsea led us down the hallway, and we stopped at a big glass showcase. The showcase contained textbooks that were used in the college. She told us that the professors there wrote most of them. Having a professor that wrote the textbook is great for your learning experience because they know everything that is in it. We turned around and headed towards the Apple Pie Café. The Apple Pie Café looked just like any other coffee shop. The walls were a warm autumn orange that made the essence of apple season come alive. Inside were students and visitors like myself amazed by the selection of pastries. Although it looked like an ordinary café, this place was like no other!
We walked a little further and turned right down a hallway filled with classrooms. Stopping at a clear window, we saw students in classic white rushing around. On the counter tops, there were little trays of chocolate. A steady hand was using a pastry bag to perfect the truffles. My mouth watered at the sight of the little delicacies. I thought how remarkable it would be if I could learn to do that. In the next classroom, students were making cookies.
Chelsea told me to make silly faces at the students to show them our interest in receiving a sample, and it worked! A few moments later a warm tray of cookies came out. They were flower shaped shortbread with a dollop of raspberry filling in the middle. I wasn’t sure how it was possible for the cookies to taste better than they looked, but they did.
As we neared the end of our tour, I realized something. Today I saw passion. The students enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America might have to sweat in their work, but behind all the focus I saw smiles. It makes happy when I see people doing things they love.
